Vibration Analysis — Common Questions

What does vibration analysis actually tell you?
Vibration analysis identifies the frequency and amplitude of vibration at each measurement point. Specific frequencies correspond to specific mechanical events — for example, bearing defect frequencies, imbalance at 1X running speed, or misalignment at 2X running speed. The pattern tells the analyst what is causing the vibration.
Can vibration analysis predict bearing failure before it happens?
Yes. Bearing defect frequencies appear in the vibration spectrum well before a bearing fails catastrophically. Regular vibration monitoring can identify developing bearing faults early enough to schedule a planned repair rather than an emergency shutdown.
How is vibration analysis different from just feeling that the pump is rough?
